Races and Athletics in Shardeloes Park

Announcement Date: 24th April 1897

The annual racing and athletic meeting took place in Shardeloes Park (by kind permission of Mr T W T Drake) on Easter Monday, and proved a great success. The weather was fine, but chilly, and the attendance was large. There was an increase in the number of entries compared with those of the previous year, there being large fields for several of the events. Mr G Clarke, the secretary, was as energetic and courteous as ever, while the rest of the officers performed their various duties with the utmost efficiency.

The prizes were subsequently presented by Mrs G Weller, from a conveyance, in which were Messrs G Weller H G Clarke and R H Rushforth. The ceremony over Mr H G Clarke called for three cheers for Mrs Weller, which were heartily given.

Refreshments were provided on the ground by Mr F Sharp, of the Saracen’s Head   and tea, by Mrs Gurney of Wheilden Street while Mr J C Young of High Street Wycombe applied the tents. Mr G Clarke catered for the committee to their complete satisfaction. The Amersham Brass Band (under the conductorship of Mr George ward) played some excellent music.
