Announcement Date: 16th June 1900

Pretoria Celebrations – On receipt of news of the capture of Pretoria, a public meeting was hurriedly convened at the Griffin Hotel when a good numbers of parishioners attended. Mr Wainwright master at the Grammar School was called to the chair, and a representative committee was at once formed to celebrate the event. A collection was made in the room which raised about £4 and was augmented afterwards considerably by outside contributions. The Carnival which was the outcome of the meeting proved a great success. The Brass Band, the Fire Brigade and the Local Friendly Societies were well represented and the townsfolk in general proved enthusiasm by the way the bunting and coloured lamps were displayed. Altogether it was a celebration unique in the history of the Old Town
