The first athletic sports held in connection with the Grammar School took place in Hand Meadow, Shardeloes, by permission of Mr W W T Drake, on Thursday July 31st. The Head Master and Mrs Wainwright had taken great interest in the undertaking, which was voted to be a great success. There was a large attendance of parents and friends, including the Squire and Mrs W W T Drake, Captain and Miss Drake. The Amersham Brass Band was in attendance, under the conductorship of Mr G Ward, and played some capital selections of music.
The boys then called for cheers for the persons named which were heartily responded to, and, at the call of the Head Master, Mr Jarrard, (one of the assistant masters) was also cheered. The Band shortly afterwards left the meadow, and after marching as far as the Town Hall, ‘God save the King’ was played and the proceedings of an enjoyable afternoon terminated.
