On Thursday week choirs composing the Amersham Deanery assembled in St Mary’s Church, of this town, for the annual rehearsal. Mr Burgess of St John’s Church, Eton, presided at the organ. The total number of the choir was 209, viz, Amersham28: Beaconsfield 15; Chalfont St Giles 30; Chalfont St Peter 26; Chesham 33; Latimer 39; Gerrards Cross 18; and Seer Green 20. The church was decorated with flowers and other adornments, beautifully executed by the Misses Drake. Amongst those present we observed Lord and Lady Chesham and family, T T Drake Esq, Mrs Drake and family, Mrs J T Drake and Misses Drake, Mrs Knollis, Mrs Lloyd, R Wingrave Esq & Mrs Wingrave, Lord Bedford Esq and Mrs Bedford, B A Brickwell Esq, Misses Brickwell, Mrs Crouch, Revs E T Drake, C Lloyd, Matson, Dickson, Hayden, Burgess, Palmer, Bullock, Herbert, Aylward, Williams, Ware, Winslow. The Bishop of Oxford preached an impressive sermon on Psalm xcviii 6. The whole of the service went off with harmonious nicety, and all seemed pleased. At the close a collection was made, and the required sum (£25) was readily obtained. Afterwards the company adjourned to a large tent erected in Front Meadow, where tea was provided by Mr Mead, of the swan Inn, to which 300 sat down. The Amersham Brass Band played at intervals.
