Annual Treat

Announcement Date: 3rd September 1898

Mr T W T  Drake of Shardeloes, gave his annual treat to his employees, together with their wife’s and children, and all the scholars of Amersham and Woodrow schools numbering altogether about 600, at Shardeloes on Friday 26th instant. The Amersham Brass Band were in attendance and preceded the children from Back Lane schools to the mansion at 2pm. Here a variety of games awaited them, which were thoroughly enjoyed. For the adults there was a cricket match and athletic sports, and in all the events there was a kindly but keen competition. Marquees had been erected and the juveniles had a splendid tea. The adults were also sumptuously provided for. At the close of the evening Mrs Drake personally distributed the prizes to the successful competitors, those for the adults consisting of useful wearing apparel and to the juveniles interesting and instructive toys. At eight o’clock all assembled along the carriage drive to witness a beautiful display of fireworks, after which the proceedings closed with hearty cheers for the ‘Squire and Mrs Drake’ and the party marched away to the strains of the Amersham Band playing ‘Auld Lang Syne’
